TEDx Speaker Dr. Kristen Race to Present to Grymes

We’re excited to announce that celebrated psychologist, author and keynote Tedx speaker Dr. Kristen Race will present to parents, teachers, school administrators and members of the community on Wednesday, March 23rd as the first featured speaker in the school’s all new “Barnhardt Lecture Series.”

A renowned child, family and school psychologist who has been featured in The New York Times, NPR, The Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, USA TODAY, CNN, and Real Simple Magazine, Dr. Race is the founder of Mindful Life™, a program designed to improve brain function and development in adults and children. Her talk, entitled “A Mindful Life: From Surviving to Thriving,” will address current science of the brain to explain how its inner workings impact moods, thoughts, and behaviors. Drawing on the latest brain research, Dr. Race will explain how mindfulness can change the brain to counter the negative effects of stress and allow people to feel happier, healthier and more present in their relationships at work and at home. Simple exercises and mindfulness techniques will be introduced as strategies for reducing stress, developing resilience and deepening interpersonal connections.

Mindfulness has been a programmatic focus at Grymes Memorial School this year thanks to a generous gift to the Grymes Memorial School Endowment to support faculty professional development. Grymes teachers have received online mindfulness training through Dr. Race’s Mindful Life program throughout the year in preparation for a faculty workshop preceding the public lecture. Many Grymes teachers have applied Dr. Race’s specific techniques, exercises and mindful practices in their classrooms and have seen an immediate impact in their classrooms.

“We are excited to work with Dr. Race in person over the course of her two day visit to learn more about the science behind the practice of mindfulness and to learn tips, tools and strategies for bringing mindfulness into our daily routines as parents, partners and co-workers,” says Dr. Penny Work, Head of School. “We’re thrilled to extend the invitation to our first Pat Barnhardt Lecture to the greater community so that anyone can learn about how to incorporate mindfulness into daily life!”

Dr. Race’s 90-minute presentation will be held from 8:45 – 10:15am on Wednesday, March 23rd in The DuPont Gym. Come one, come all! The event is free of charge and open to the public.
