S
hyla Estes, a resident of Madison County, is an alumna of Grymes Memorial School where she attended middle school until she graduated from 8th grade in 1988. Shyla attended Madison County High School and received a B.A in French with a Spanish minor and her M.S. in Education Curriculum and Instruction from Radford University. Shyla began her teaching career in 1998, teaching one year in Galax, Virginia. For the next seven years, she taught English for Speakers of Other Languages in grades one through six in Fairfax County.
Shyla began her search for “an environment in which enthusiasm and creativity are valued and children are encouraged to think critically while developing a love of learning.” This search led Shyla and her daughter, Aspen, to Grymes which enables her to continue her career in teaching and provide her daughter with the right educational environment.
Shyla enjoys scrapbooking, hiking, and reading in her spare time. Point of interest—the name “Shyla” means “ goddess” in Hindi.
