Lee Berry was born in Richmond, Virginia. Her family moved to rural Madison County in the late sixties where she attended high school. Lee graduated with a B.A. in Early Childhood Education from Lynchburg College in 1977. She began her teaching career in Madison County public schools as a first grade teacher until 1986. Lee made the decision to suspend her teaching career and stay at home when her first daughter was born. Lee and her husband Jack, have three daughters, Anne Garland, Meredith, and Laura, all Grymes alumni. Lee eased back into the field of education for two years in 1991 by accepting a position as the curriculum coordinator and teacher at Rainbow Pre-school at the Madison Methodist Church. Several years later, in search of a strong middle school program for her oldest daughter, Anne Garland, Lee discovered Grymes Memorial School. In the fall of 1997, when her daughter joined the Grymes 6th grade class, Lee was hired to tutor several sixth grade Grymes students. The next year, along with tutoring, she team-taught 8th grade English with Dana Bost. The position of Director of Admission opened in the spring of 1999 and Lee added this title to her duties at Grymes. As Director of Admissions, Lee has the honor and privilege of introducing families to Grymes and sharing her personal Grymes experiences as a former parent and member of the faculty. She feels Grymes is “the way all schools should be with supportive families, dedicated, intelligent, and innovative faculty who model good values and work ethics, and a challenging curriculum which sparks the enthusiasm of the students. The combination of professionalism and camaraderie among the faculty and staff makes Grymes a pleasurable and effective workplace. This contributes greatly to the quality of the program here.” Aside from her work at Grymes, Lee enjoys spending time with her family, which includes a mixed Parsons(JRT) Terrier named “Russ”, walking, traveling, dinner with friends, and home improvement projects.
