Kim grew up all over the U.S. but spent most of her time in Toledo, Ohio. She graduated from Notre Dame Academy, an all-girl school in Toledo. Kim spent middle school years living in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia and she feels these years really helped to shape and expand her view of the world.
She has traveled all over the world, including Greece, Italy, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, Thailand, Hong Kong, Kenya, Egypt, Belgium, Germany, France, England, and Scotland. She watched Santa arrive by boat in Thailand, rode an elephant in Sri Lanka, and faced down an angry elephant in Kenya! However, even after all her travel experience, at the age of 13, as she passed through the state of Virginia on a family trip, she decided this was the state where she wanted to live when she “grew up".
Kim graduated from Miami University in 1990 with a BS in secondary English education. After graduating from college in ‘90 she packed her bags and headed to Charlottesville. Orange has been her home since ’91. Kim’s first job was teaching 7th grade English at Prospect Heights Middle School. After that, she taught 6th grade language arts and social studies, drama, and math, intermittently, for 10 years. While at Prospect, Kim met her husband, Andy, and helped as a sponsor for the Discovery Program, which he developed. During this venture, Kim learned how to rock climb, mountain bike, and kayak, and participated in two Outward Bound courses. Kim decided to make a career change in 2000, and moved to the library at Orange Elementary School. She is currently working on her school library science endorsement through Longwood University which she anticipates completing sometime in 2007.
Kim has two children: Claire and Jackson who are both students at Grymes. Her personal interests and hobbies include: gardening, jewelry-making, reading, and any and all arts and crafts. Kim’s husband, Andy, is a former teacher and now works as the Director of Outreach and Education at the Virginia Center for Digital History at the University of Virginia.
