The goal of the athletic program is to provide students the opportunity to identify and develop his or her potential through interscholastic athletics.
All seventh and eighth graders have the opportunity to play on sports teams in the fall, winter and spring. In the fall, boys play soccer and girls play field hockey. In the winter both boys and girls play basketball. In the spring boys play lacrosse and girls play soccer. Teams play a full schedule of games at home and away against other area schools including St. Anne's Belfield, Highland, Fredericksburg Academy, Culpeper Christian Academy, St. Luke's, and Stuart Hall. Students who play team sports at Grymes benefit in so many ways. They learn a sport, habits of a healthy lifestyle, discipline, sportsmanship, and teamwork. Each season, outstanding athletes are recognized at a sports assembly.
Fall 2008 Boys Soccer
The boys’ soccer team had a tough season this fall, but ended with a strong game and a bright outlook for next year. Coming off a two year undefeated record, the Grizzlies, who lost several high scoring eighth graders, ended the year with a 1 and 5 record. They had close matches against St. Luke’s and St. Anne’s Bellefield, and not so close matches against Fredericksburg Academy, Fork Union Military Academy, and Highland. In the last game of the season against Field School of Crozet, the Grizzlies passed well on offense and put together nice plays on defense to race to a 6-0 win.
Fall 2008 Girls Field Hockey
The girls ended the fall season with 1 win, 6 losses and 1 tie. They fought hard against teams from Fredericksburg Academy, Walker Grant, St. Anne’s Bellefield, Richmond Panthers, Highland and Holy Cross. Coaches Anna Burkett, Conway Faulconer, and Lindsley Royster were impressed by the girls’ tenacity and sportsmanship in a year of building skills and teamwork.
