Music

The music program at Grymes introduces students to the world of music through a variety of activities.

From junior kindergarten to eighth grade, children are exposed to music and musical instruments from a simple round to a full band performance. Children sing, move, explore instruments, compose and listen to various styles and genres of music with special emphasis placed on theory and music reading skills. The music classroom is a unique setting in which one can perform as an individual but must also be a member of an ensemble. Evaluation of the student is not based on performance but rather on participation and effort. The curriculum is sequential and increasing with difficulty as various concepts of music are mastered.

Once in the upper school, students begin to receive instruction on a band instrument. The teacher and student decide together which instrument is the best choice. The students will learn the proper playing technique and care of their instrument. The student is evaluated on performance as well as participation and effort.

All music students have plenty of opportunities to show off their singing and performance skills on stage. Some class plays are musicals, and everyone participates in the Christmas pageant with singing, and performances by various bands.
