Second Graders Study China

Posted January 28, 2010

Grymes Memorial School second grade students invited Evelyn Chaleki, mother of Ben Chaleki and first generation American, to speak to the class on Friday, January 22nd. She wore a traditional silk outfit and jade jewelry. She focused her talk on 3 Chinese inventions: paper, silk, and porcelain. She brought authentic samples of each including decorative scrolls, a silk butterfly kite and intricate lion wall hanging, and porcelain plates and vases. The children were thrilled to examine these items and asked many thoughtful questions. She also taught them to say hello and count to 10 in Chinese. She discussed differences in Chinese and American culture. The class will continue their study of China as part of their social studies curriculum this semester.
