Third Graders Protest!

Posted January 13, 2010

Grymes Memorial School third grade students began studying, after Christmas break, the events leading up to Virginia’s participation in the Revolutionary War. They had Taxation without Representation Day and the third graders were unjustly taxed for participation in P.E., lunch, recess and use of classroom resources such as paper! The students had to choose whether they were Loyalists or Patriots. The students were “fined” in M &Ms and had to pay the third grade tax collector, Mrs. Estes. By the end of the day, all students were Patriots and made posters declaring their opposition to taxation without representation. Students held a protest in the afternoon and marched around the circle in the parking lot chanting, “Give me liberty or give me death!”
